As far back as the Bronze Age The River Trent has been a historic highway and it formed part of the trade route between the Continent and the metal-working industry in Ireland. Staffordshire is home to miles of scenic canals and Stoke on Trent has two canals running through its centre. The Trent and Mersey still passes by Stoke's traditional potteries and The Caldon Canal which runs for 18 miles from Stoke to Froghall Wharf.

Considered to be the home of the pottery industry and commonly known as The Potteries the area has been almost exclusively known for its industrial-scale pottery manufacturing since the 17th century. Many of the world renowned names in the pottery trade such as Royal Doulton, Spode, Wedgwood and Minton are linked to the area.

At The Wedgwood Visitor Centre learn about the history of Josiah Wedgwood and his immortal legacy. Watch the products being made then have a go at making them yourself at the potter's wheel

Sit in the calm surroundings of the Unique Chinese garden including a temple enclosed within its own Great Wall of China. The Victorians were known for their eccentricities and see if you can find within the grounds an upside-down tree and strange stone sculpture.
