April Fools Day or All Fools Day is celebrated in Great Britain on the 1st April by the playing of practical jokes and pranks. There are two contenders for the first April Fool, the Greek goddess Demeter and the dove which to the Noah released from the Ark during the flood. It is suggested that both were sent out to do an impossible task or were sent on a fool's errand. The goddess Demeter failed in her quest to rescue her daughter Persephone from underworld and the dove was sent out on the seemingly hopeless task of finding signs of dry land. One of the best loved pranks was played by the BBC on the Panorama programme when they duped viewers into believing that spaghetti grew on trees.
