People planning Canal Boat Holidays in Shropshire may soon be provided with a new route to explore, after plans to transform and regenerate a stretch of Whitchurch Canal moved a step closer. On March 17th, the Whitchurch Waterway Trust held a meeting to discuss the possibility of further extending the canal. The organisation's members supported the idea of expanding the waterway through two bridges and creating a new basin, allowing for the future possibility of extending it further to carry on towards the town with a lock or inclined plane. According to the Shropshire Star, the project would cost around £350,000 to carry out and would give those on Canal Boat Holidays in Shropshire better access to Whitchurch, for which the expanded route would become a tourist attraction. The Whitchurch Waterway Trust was established in the 1980s after the local authority expressed interest in having a canal in the town. |
