People on Canal Boat Holidays in Warwickshire could be drawn in by the county's reputation as Shakespeare Country. The Guardian commends the area's rich historical heritage and highlights sites to visit including Warwick Castle. This construction was built back in 914AD by Ethelfleda, with the burh - a rampart made of earth - designed to protect those living in Warwick from invaders. It was expanded into a motte and bailey fort by William the Conqueror in 1068 and this was converted into stone nearly two centuries later. A number of new towers were built in the 14th century, as well as the castle's dungeon - which could be the perfect place for those on Canal Boat Holidays in Warwickshire to take the kids. In a similar vein, the castle is now running a number of events exploring the life of Sir Fulke Greville - who was killed 400 years ago and now inhabits the site known as the Ghost Tower. |
