Clocks in the UK are due to go forward by one hour this weekend meaning that the evenings will be lighter for longer. The idea of British Summer Time was first proposed in Britain by William Willett who was incensed at the waste of useful daylight first thing in the morning. Britain first adopted William Willetts Daylight Saving Time scheme in1916 during the First World War. The Summer Time Act of 1916 was quickly passed by Parliament and the first day of British Summer Time was widely reported in the press. Daylight Saving Time is proven to save on energy because people are not using so much power to heat and light their homes. Clocks in the UK are currently changed twice a year in the spring and in the autumn. A simple rule to remember and to never forget which way round is Clocks Spring forward in the Spring and Fall back in the autumn.
