A tremor which measured 3. 9 on the Richter scale struck six miles beneath the busy shipping route of the English Channel this morning. Buildings in the area were said to be shaking in the wake of the 8am quake 53 miles from Portsmouth. The quake shock the famous Spinnaker Tower and was felt as far away as Brighton and Worthing in Sussex. David Kerridge from the British Geological Survey said this is the largest earthquake in this area since 1734. The Police, Solent Coastguard and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said they had not been called out to any incidents related to the quake.
