The maintenance work being performed on the Grand Union Canal near Berkhamsted is set to be completed before the main season for those on Canal Boat Holidays. British Waterways is currently dredging a mile-long stretch of canal between bridges 143 and 145, investing £300,000 on getting this area up to scratch. Paul Fox, dredging manager, said this is only one example of the organisation's renovations of the country's waterways. He said: 'This particular section of the Grand Union at Berkhamsted requires dredging primarily because of the number of storm overflows that enter the canal at this point. 'Mr Fox added that if testing finds a need for bank stabilisation then this will either be in the form of the dredgings or an alternative solution. In other news, British Waterways is also performing work on the Caen Hill lock gates in order to improve conditions for those on Canal Boat Holidays in Wiltshire. |
