Archaeologists have revealed that six cannons that belonged to the feared pirate Henry Morgan have been recovered from a Panama river. Divers have been searching a wreck on the banks of the Rio Chagres since 2008 and last week it was confirmed that the cannons had been recovered. The archaeological survey was coordinated by the Waitt Institute with collaboration with Panama's National Culture Institute.
In 1671 the swashbuckling adventurer Morgan sent three ships to capture the Castillo de San Lorenzo el Real de Chagres which was a fort that guarded the approach to Panama City. However as the notorious buccaneer and his crew were sailing up the Chagres River to join them at least four of his vessels crashed onto the Lajas Reef and sank into the shallow water. This forced the Capitan and the crew to abandon their ships and walk overland to Panama City. So you see it's not just Disney, Hollywood and Johnny Depp, alias Captain Jack Sparrow, pirates are very much a part of our seafaring history.
From your Canal Boat Holiday in Hilperton you can easily reach the seaport of Bristol. Few people know just how much of the ports history is linked with Pirates. Bristol was the home to one of the most feared of them all Blackbeard who sailed from the harbour. Bristol Harbour has been in existence since the 13th century and has over the last 20 years undergone a vast redevelopment. |
