The London 2012 Olympic velodrome, nicknamed the giant Pringle, has been nominated by RIBA for the Stirling prize. Nicknamed the giant Pringle for its crisp like curves, is in the running to be named building of the year after picking up a design award from the Royal Institute of British Architects. The 6,000-seat building, completed in February, is the first construction at the 9 billion Olympic park in east London. A Siberian pine wood, 35 miles worth of timber in total, and over 350,000 nails were used to build the track which took 26 carpenters eight weeks to install. The sweeping roof is designed to resemble the curve of the cycling track and the 2012 London chairman Lord Sebastian Coe described it as a stunning venue built for champions.
