16-03-2010 : Restoration trust turns sights to Southland Lock

People enjoying Canal Boat Holidays in the UK may soon be provided with a new route to explore after the Wey And Arun Canal Trust announced that it is moving on to the next navigable section of the canal in Loxwood.

Now that the trust has almost completed its work on the Devil's Hole Lock, which is due to reopen on April 17th, it is now appealing for funds to reconstruct the Southland Lock.

The organisation plans to use Ekki, an environmentally-friendly tropical hardwood, to create gates and a bridge on the lock, which will also allow local wildlife to cross the canal.

It is believed that the cost of the restoration will be around £300,000, which the Wey And Arun Canal Trust plans to make through its own fundraising activities.

The trust began restoration of the Devil's Hole lock in 1996, after it was used for demolition practice by Canadian Army Engineers in 1942.
