St George is the Patron Saint of England and St Georges Day is celebrated on 23rd April each year.
The legend of George slaying a dragon and rescuing an innocent maiden from death is medieval.
Little is known about the real St George and he is thought to have been born into a noble Christian family in the late third century in Cappadocia. He followed his father into the profession of soldier and became part of the retinue of the Emperor Diocletian. In 303 he was tortured and executed in Palestine, becoming an early Christian martyr. A traditional custom on St Georges Day is to wear a red rose or to fly or adorn the St George Cross Flag.
