A new research project is underway to determine how the Red Swamp Crayfish has expanded across the UK's waterways.

Although rare, there have been several sightings of the crustacean, British Waterways revealed, especially along the Regent's Canal in central London.

Ecologists are keen to see whether or not populations are increasing and whether an impact is being seen on the White Clawed Crayfish.

British Waterways ecologist, Leela O'Dea said: 'This study will inform the way we support these valuable ecosystems and help us ensure they continue to provide a wildlife haven across the country in years to come.

'She added that the study will also help improve knowledge of how the species interact in the UK's canal network and elsewhere.

Bat ecologists were recently hired around the Lune Aqueduct to see whether the creatures have been nesting around the historic grade I listed structure.
