After years of clean up operations and hard work the rivers in England and Wales are now much healthier and are teeming with wildlife. A list of the ten most improved rivers in England and Wales has been released by the Environment Agency and they include some that were black with coal dust. Ian Barker, a spokesman from the Environment Agency said Britains rivers are the healthiest for over twenty years and otters, salmon and other wildlife are returning for the first time since the industrial revolution. The River Wandle in London was declared a sewer in the 1960s and now is one of the cleanest rivers in the whole of England. Some of the other rivers to receive the accolade were The River Stour in Worcestershire and the River Thames.
