Its was on this day, 16th February 1923 in Thebes, Egypt the English archaeologist Howard Carter first entered the sealed burial chamber of King Tutankhamen. King Tutankhamen lived in Egypt around 1400 B. C. and died when he was still a teenager. The ancient Egyptians carefully preserved the bodies of their Kings and Queens and buried them in elaborate tombs containing priceless treasures.
Howard Carter was backed by Lord Carnarvon and he searched for five years for the tomb without success. In 1922 Lord Carnarvon wanted to call off the search but, convinced he was near, Carter persuaded him to give him more time. The wait paid off when riches beyond their wildest dreams were found in the tomb including golden shrines and statues, a chariot, weapons and clothing. Despite rumours that a curse would befall anyone who disturbed the tomb its treasures were removed and most of these can be found on display at Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
