Leicestershire canal boat holidays06-04-2010 : Canal boat holidays in Leicestershire: Treasure found in canal |
Those planning canal boat holidays in leicestershire this year may wish to keep an eye out for buried treasure on their break, after valuable silverware was recovered from the ashby canal at higham on the hill. British waterways engineers carrying out routine maintenance at the site discovered two silver chalices and a communion plate, worth around £3,500, in a bag at the bottom of the water.
After handing the items in to the police, it was revealed that they had been stolen from the safe at st john's church in hinckley more than seven years ago. 'these items are relatively rare and had distinctive inscriptions on them, which helped us identify them,' commented sergeant gary butterworth of hinckley and bosworth local policing unit.
'the church had also been able to give us photographs when they first reported them as stolen. 'ashby canal is 22 miles long and passes by the historic scene of the battle of bosworth, making it a favourite destination for those on canal boat holidays in leicestershire.
