A recent inspection has found that barn owls are doing particularly well along the aire & calder navigation. British waterways has come to the rescue of these threatened species and has seen a marked improvement in their ability to survive.
It joined forces with the wildlife conservation partnership to provide more nesting options to the birds in order to improve their population. As a result, the barn owls are doing particularly well and may even be spotted by those on canal boat holidays in yorkshire.
Phillippa baron, senior ecologist for british waterways, commented: 'the scheme is going really well and every year there have been successful breeding pairs. 'the waterways are home to many protected species and they provide an ideal home and feeding ground.
