UK Canal boat holidays17-06-2010 : Canals receive wildlife funding boost |
British waterways had been granted a share of £10,000 to help improve habitats for wildlife across a number of canals in the uk. The funding was provided as part of the waterways trust's small grants scheme, which awards prizes on an annual basis.
Among the plans for the money is to install barn own and kestrel nesting boxes and to lay a hedgerow along the rochdale canal. There are a number of projects in the pipeline, which british waterways hopes will encourage the sustainability of wildlife across the country.
Joanne darlington, development director in england and wales at the waterways trust, said: 'our canals and rivers provide excellent habitat and breeding spots for a wide range of birds, including some protected species. 'we are extremely grateful to everyone who donated so generously to our waterway birds appeal.
'this summer will see a conference taking place in wales to assess how local communities benefit from the presence of canals. |
