21-07-2010 : Dewsbury prepares for canal festival this weekend

This weekend's dewsbury canal festival is expected to pull in crowds of locals and canal boat hire customers keen to take part in the multitude of activities on offer.  Canal boat holidaymakers can find the event along the calder & hebble navigation at savile town wharf on july 25th.

The main event will be the traditional boat pull competition, during which teams compete for a barrel of beer by attempting to pull a canal boat over a set distance in the shortest amount of time.  Festival organiser and managing director of calder valley marine gordon lambert explained: 'the festival is a hugely enjoyable event for all the family.

children love the funfair and face painting and for adults there's beer to be won in the boat pull which is always great entertainment.  'we hope that the local community are able to come down and see their local waterway environment in a different light.

'last weekend, the leeds waterfront festival lit up the leeds & liverpool canal through key locations throughout leeds city centre, with revellers canoeing, water ball walking and live music.
