UK Canal boat holidays12-02-2010 : Expert: Canals 'are a national resource' |
Britain's waterways are an essential national resource that must be protected at all costs, an expert has claimed. Robin evans, chief executive of british waterways, has claimed that these should also be a proud part of the local community, enjoyed by those living near them and people on canal boat holidays.
He calls for volunteer groups and local communities to get involved with the annual cleanup of the waterways, as this can be a great way for people to feel involved with these areas. 'we want communities to feel a sense of ownership in their local canals and rivers and towpath tidy provides a great opportunity for people to get involved and find out more,' he explains.
The campaign to protect rural england, which is involved in the event, recently called on fans of canal boat holidays to help make the countryside a major issue at the next general election. |
