Kennet & avon canal is on the brink of being approved as a national cruiseway, which would enable people to extend the scope of their canal boat holidays in england. The canal has undergone a massive restoration project over the last ten years, and a bid by british waterways and the kennet and avon canal trust to have it reclassified from its current remainder status is close to success.
A six-week consultation on the classification was launched last week (july 16th), with canal lovers undoubtedly awaiting the approval of the department for food and rural affairs with baited breath. Commenting following the launch of the consultation, british waterways waterway manager mark stephens explained: 'british waterways has, in reality, been managing the kennet & avon canal as if it has had cruiseway status since its multi-million pound restoration.
'here at british waterways we believe that this is the appropriate classification for this popular and much-loved waterway, which this year is celebrating its 200th anniversary. 'those taking canal boat holidays on the canal are within easy reach of bath.
Tourists can visit the ancient city throughout the summer to take advantage of torch-lit tours of the famed roman baths, which will be available until august 31st.
