Wales canal boat holidays14-01-2010 : Frozen Pontcysyllte Canal 'very picturesque' |
Fans of canal boat holidays have been invited to enjoy some of the uk's beautiful frozen waterways while the snow lasts. British waterways has highlighted the pontcysyllte aqueduct - a favourite among those on canal boat holidays in wales - as one stunning example of a frozen canal.
Despite its beauty, the organisation has highlighted the importance of being safe when near these waterways. It reported that 90 per cent of the 2,200-mile waterway network has frozen solid and advising visitors against walking on the ice.
'british waterways is warning that although the snowy waterways look safe to walk or play on, any attempt to go on the ice is extremely dangerous,' it stated. Other picturesque locations it highlighted are the caen hill flight in wiltshire, scotland's the falkirk wheel and the foxton locks in leicestershire.
The leicester mercury recently reported that 60-year-old boat lover jim redhead has praised the warmth of narrowboats, saying that his coal burners have kept him warm despite the frozen canals. |
