Wales canal boat holidays08-12-2009 : Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to be drained for maintenance |
A total of £60 million is to be invested in maintaining the uk's waterways, including works on the pontcysyllte aqueduct. The structure is to be drained by british waterways and this will enable work to be done to protect this part of the llangollen canal.
It will be thoroughly inspected and cleaned as part of the works, which will please narrowboat fans. Earlier this year, the pontcysyllte aqueduct was awarded unesco world heritage status, which could be behind the decision.
Jim stirling, technical director of british waterways, has highlighted the 'significant improvements' in the condition of the locks, bridges and other structures along the waterways. He states: 'with the spectacular pontcysyllte aqueduct, [maintaining it] is only possible by draining the water, which provides a fascinating glimpse into what goes on below the surface.
'british waterways will also be holding its annual canal spring clean in the first two weeks of march next year. |
