26-01-2013 : MOOR UP AT STOKE BRUERNE ON A CANAL BOAT HOLIDAY

Whilst you are on your Canal Boat Holiday cruising the Grand Union Canal do not miss the opportunity of exploring the area in and around Stoke Bruerne.

Moor up and take a gentle stroll alongside the Grand Union Canal, through the lush fields and wide bridleways that connect the villages of Stoke Bruerne and Blisworth.

Marvel at the fact the beneath your feet, ghosts are said to haunt the Blisworth Tunnel under the hill.

The Blisworth Tunnel is one of the longest on the waterways and also reputed to be one of the most haunted.

Even today, boat users report strange lights in the gloom and cries of workers lost during the construction.

Visit the restored corn mill which is now home to the National Waterways Museum.

Housed in the museum are working models which brings to life the unique 200 year old story of our waterways.

Once claypits for the canal brickworks you can easily walk to a 15-acre nature reserve, with damp grassland providing the perfect habitat for insects, small mammals and birds, including barn owls.

Make the effort to walk up the hill to St Mary’s Church which was used as a sighting point for the line the canal tunnel was to take.
