Scotland canal boat holidays

For several decades, before the railway was established, the Union Canal provided an important link across central Scotland.

The transportation of coal was one of the main reasons for building the Union Canal.

Although war with France saw its construction delayed construction began in1818 and the canal open in 1822.

An eleven lock flight connected the Union Canal with the Forth And Clyde Canal at Falkirk and provided a direct inland connection between the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Canal's profitability was greatly diminished by the opening of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway in 1842.

The lock flight was demolished during 1930's and following a period of decline the Union Canal was abandoned in the 1960's.

In 2001 the Union Canal was reopened as part of the Millennium Link which was the largest canal restoration ever to be seen in Britain.

The project incorporated the construction of the Falkirk Wheel which reconnected the Union Canal and the Forth And Clyde Canal for the first time in over 70 years.

Cruise the Union Canal and take a trip on the Wheel from our Canal Boat Holiday base in Falkirk.
