Scotland canal boat holidays

Canal Boat Holiday guests cruising the Union Canal in Scotland are invited to join in with a wildflower survey.

Tomorrow, 27th April, Scottish Waterways Trust are joining forces with a wildflower expert for this important survey, which will follow the Union Canal between Edinburgh Quay and Slateford Aqueduct.

All the information which is collected will be sent to Plantlife, an organisation dedicated to protecting wildflowers and their habitats.

Wild flowers are abundant on the canal banks and these attract a host of butterflies and insects.

One of the first hedgerow flowers to appear in the spring is the blackthorn and marvel as it bursts with clouds of small, starry white flowers.

Once this beautiful display of flowers is over, blackthorn comes into its own in autumn, when it bears small plum like fruits known as sloes.

In the Spring bluebells cover the woodland in a haze of blue the ramsons or wild garlic spread themselves over woodlands in a mass of white flowers.

Butterflies, bees and insects make their homes in the safe haven of the canals banks and are attracted by the flowers that grow there.
