10-10-2012 : A CANAL BOAT HOLIDAY AND THE PONTCYSYLLTE AQUEDUCT

The magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee and the beautiful Dee Valley.

Built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop the Aqueduct was open for passage in 1805.

The Aqueduct is truly a spectacular sight carrying the canal at a height of 125 feet and is over 1000 feet long.

Crossing over the Pontcysyllte in a Canal Boat gives the effect of being suspended in mid air and it has got to be the worlds only white knuckle rides that only travels at 3 to 4 miles per hour.

You can experience the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct from our Canal BoatHoliday bases at Blackwater Meadow Marina, Whitchurch Marina or Wrenbury Marina.

Some interesting Aqueducts Facts are translated the name Pontcysyllte means the bridge that connects.

In 2005 it celebrated its bicentenary, with a 16 gun salute, a Napoleonic battle re enactment, music and firework display.

In June 2009 the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct gained the status of a World Heritage site putting it on a par with the Great Barrier Reef, The Statue of Liberty and The Taj Mahal in India.

The Aqueduct had to be built as light as possible and therefore the slender masonry piers are partly hallow in places.

The Aqueduct holds one and a half million litres of water and when the Aqueduct needs to be maintain they simply pull out the plug and all that water takes two hours to drain away onto the valley below.

For the non Welsh speaking Pontcysyllte is pronounced something like pont ker suth tee.
