09-03-2012 : CRUISE THE MONTGOMERY CANAL ON A CANAL BOAT HOLIDAY

Cruise the Montgomery Canal on your Canal Boat Holiday from Blackwater Medaow, Whitchurch or Wrenbury.

Enjoy the glorious scenery and the spectacular views across the countryside to the Welsh Berwyn Mountains and beyond to Snowdonia.

The Montgomery Canal is peaceful and rural and because access to the canal is controlled by the lock keeper there are only ever a limited number of Canal Boat users on the stretch at anyone time.

This means that during your Canal Boat Holiday you will virtually have the whole canal to yourselves.

The short distance that can be cruised makes the diversion off The Llangollen Canal, close to Ellesmere, at the Frankton Junction well worth the effort.

From the Frankton Junction there is a seven mile stretch which is navigable and includes nearly one lock for each mile, there are six in total.

The Montgomery Canal has also been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is most noted for its aquatic plants.

An interesting feature on the Montgomery Canal is The New Perry Aqueduct which spans the River Perry and is constructed of steel trough sections.

The lovely pub and restaurant at Queens Head welcomes Canal Boat users and serves good food and ale.

A short walk from Queens Head will lead you to Aston Nature reserve which is being extended to provide a major new wetland areas.

Otters are frequent visitors to the reserve and waters voles are returning to the canal after an absence of many years.

Maesbury is a beautifully preserved village largely built alongside the Montgomery Canal and offers a Post Office, shop and tea room all within easy access of the canal.

The Navigation Inn welcomes Canal Boaters, muddy dogs and children and serves meals and fine ales.
