Shropshire canal boat holidays

07-02-2012 : SHROPSHIRE CANAL BOAT JOINS DIAMOND JUBILEE PAGEANT

A Shropshire Canal Boat crewed by people with disabilities will represent the county in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Shropshire Lass narrow boat will make the 220 mile journey to London using the canal network.

Owned by the Lyneal Trust, the boats crew will include army servicemen and women wounded in action.

Chairman Chris Symes said the charity, based on the Llangollen Canal near Ellesmere, was working with Shrewsbury barracks and the pageant would form part of the army's rehabilitation programme.

He added that the charity, which specialises in holidays for people with disabilities, was excited and proud to be representing the county at the pageant.

A second boat, The Shropshire Lad, will also complete the journey to London, which includes 190 locks and is expected to take up to two weeks.

Explore the Llangollen Canal on a Canal Boat Holiday booked from Ellesmere in Shropshire.

Experience the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and crossing this in a Canal Boat will give the effect of being suspended in mid air.

Built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop and opened in 1805 it spans the Dee Valley at a height of 125 feet high.

In June 2009 it became a World Heritage site putting it on an equal footing with the Great Barrier Reef and Statue of Liberty.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit the beautiful town of Llangollen situated at the end of the canal.

Llangollen is famous the world over for the annual International Musical Eisteddfod.

Each July 4,000 competitors from more than fifty countries come together in a gala of song, music and dance.
