Sixty years ago, aged just 27 year, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in Westminster Abbey and to commemorate the occasion a service was held there this week.

Queen Elizabeth II actually became the monarch on 6th February 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI.

She then had to wait almost four months before her Coronation as this gave people time to mourn her father and ensure there was enough time to prepare for the big ceremony.

The actual 60th anniversary date was on Sunday and the Queen marked the day privately with her family at home at Windsor Castle.

Thousands of people lined the streets outside Westminster Abbey where they caught sight of other members of the Royal Family The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of Cambridge and the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge,Prince Harry, the Duke of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the Princess Royal and Zara Phillips with her husband Mike Tindall.

Amongst the congregation will be some people who took part in the 1953 service including Lady Glenconner was one of the Queen's six maids of honour.

Any Canal Boat Holiday guests lucky enough to be in the crowd had very different weather from that of 60 years ago, today the sun shone on the well wishers whereas in 1952 in was wet and cold.
