23-05-2013 : BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC AT LIVERPOOL DOCKS

Canal Boat Holiday guests cruising the Leeds And Liverpool Canal this summer are in for a series of fantastic maritime celebrations.

A special consecutive of events will bring the Liverpool waterfront alive this summer as The Liverpool on the Waterfront programme, which is free to the public, runs from late May to early June.

The programme will be launched with the city hosting the 70th and final national anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Atlantic this Friday, 24th May and will close with the revival of the Mersey River Festival from 7th to 9th June.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II, running from 1939 to the defeat of Germany in 1945.

This will be followed on consecutive weekends by the Albert Dock and Tate Gallery 25th anniversary events and finally by the Music on the Waterfront concerts, which run parallel with the Mersey River Festival.

The Battle of the Atlantic event is jointly organised by the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and Liverpool City Council, with activities at the waterfront and in the city.

Twenty five warships will be at the Cruise Terminal, Albert and Canning Docks, with some open to visitors.

They will represent both sides of the conflict with vessels from the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Russia and the US and all warships will depart in a parade together on 28th May.

The following weekend will mark 25 years since the reopening of the regenerated Albert Dock complex.

Tate Liverpool will hold a kids drawing workshop and Merseyside Maritime Museum is also offering a free family events.

The final weekend sees the return of the live Music on the Waterfront with Smooth Radio concerts on the outdoor stage in front of the Royal Liver Building.

This weekend will also see the return of the Mersey River Festival with tall ships, historic vessels, street theatre and shanty music.
