05-09-2012 : BURNLEY CANAL FESTIVAL

If you happen to be cruising the Leeds And Liverpool Canal this weekend on your Canal Boat Holiday why not pop along and join in the celebrations at the Burnley Canal Festival.

Organisers are expecting up to 50 Canal Boats and around 1,000 people to attend the debut canal festival which starts on Friday 7th September.

Taking place around the Weavers Triangle area of the Leeds and Liverpool in Burnley the festival will celebrate the important role that the canal plays in the town.

A host of events will take place along the canal including live music from a number of folk bands and local artists, canalaroke at the Inn on the wharf, guided walks, canoeing taster sessions and canal stalls.

On Friday evening an outdoor cinema will open up at Sandygate Square.

The film programme will include Sam Hannas local Burnley films, historic canal films such as Barging Along, and the premiere of a contemporary new film set in Burnley, Triangle, by local film makers Dave Halsted and Lisa Thomas.

The historic Canal Boat The Kennet newly restored by the Leeds And Liverpool Canal Society will be moored up on the canal for people to visit.

There will also be Canal Boat trips up and down the Straight Mile, one of the seven wonders of the waterways, aboard the Canal Boat Pendle Explorer.

The festival final Boat Glow will feature an array of decorated Canal Boats illuminated by a spectacular firework display .
