16-11-2011 : CANAL PHOTOGRAPH WINS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

Each year the BBC Countryfile programme sets a photographic competition for its viewers to compete for a place in the their prestigious calendar which is sold in aid of the Charity Children in Need.

In addition to the honour of appearing in the calendar each of the twelve winning pictures are put forward and viewers are asked to judge the overall best.

The best in show this year was a Canal Boat scene taken on the Grand Western Canal at Tiverton in Devon by Sarah Williams.

The programme received thousands of entries and former competition finalists helped to narrow down the number of entries.

The final choice was then made by presenter John Craven, wildlife expert Chris Packham and new judge, former newspaper editor and keen rambler, Janet Street Porter.

Each judge had their own categories to sift through, and they each had plenty to say about the standard of entries.

Janet enjoyed her debut and said she was thrilled to have been asked to be a judge because she spends a huge amount of time in the countryside.

John craven has been presiding over the competition since it started more than a decade ago and for him what stood out was the sheer quality of the entries.

He said last year the calendar raised well over one million pounds for Children in Need so let us hope that we can get towards the two million mark this year.
