15-03-2013 : CELEBRATE ST PATRICKS DAY ON A CANAL BOAT HOLIDAY

Sunday March 17th is the feast day of Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick was born in 385 AD somewhere along the west coast of Britain possibly in the Welsh town of Banwen.

In Ireland people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks as legend has it that Saint Patrick would use the shamrock to explain the Trinity, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Shamrock is the national flower of Ireland although it is not the Irish national emblem the harp has that honour.

Outside of Ireland the largest Saint Patricks Day Parade is held in New York City but there are many towns in the UK that hold their own.

If you happen to be in Manchester on a Canal Boating Holiday then go along to the city centre and join in with their celebrations.

Manchester claims to host the Uks biggest parade with more than 70 floats and marching bands taking part.

If you are cruising the Grand Ring on a Canal Boating Holiday and happen to be in London this Sunday join the tens of thousands revellers who will be celebrating in Trafalgar Square.

Expect marching bands and floats, food stalls, street performers and live music.

If you are cruising the Kennet And Avon Canal on your Canal Boating Holiday then moor up in Bristol and view the annual St Patricks Day Parade.

If you are on a Canal Boating Holiday from Falkirk in Scotland Edingburghs Festival of Ireland is being held on 18th March.

So join in with the celebrations where you can during your Canal Boating Holiday or simply visit a canal side pub and raise a glass of Guinness and toast the Irish on St Patricks Day.
