UK Canal boat holidays

The River Severn is Britain's longest river and and can be navigated on a Canal Boat Holiday booked from Alvechurch or Worcester marinas.

From its source high in the Welsh Mountains at Plynlimon it flows for 220 miles into the Bristol Channel.

The River Severn is world famous for its Bore and its tide is the second highest in the world with a range which can be in excess of 50 feet.

During the high tides the water is funnelled up the estuary into a wave that travels upstream against the river current.

The largest bores occur in spring and is accompanied by a rapid rise in water level which continues for about one and a half hours after the bore has passed.

Surfing the Severn Bore has become very popular and surfers come from all over the world to ride the famous bore.

There can be up to 20 surfers trying to master surfing the bore and ride one of the longest waves in the world.

The Severn Bore has an average speed of 16km per hour and can reach reach a height of 2 metres.

The next mighty bore will be on 11th of March and this phenomenon can be viewed along the lower lengths of the River Severn just downstream from Gloucester and the best vantage points are at Minsterworth, Stonebench, Over Bridge or Weir Green.
