A dolphin has been rescued after swimming miles up the River Dee in Flintshire.

An RNLI lifeboat hoisted the dolphin out of the water before carrying it out to sea, according to the British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Alan Forrester, lifeboat operations manager with Flint RNLI, told Radio Wales the rescue boat was launched at Connah's Quay after the dolphin was seen floundering on a sandbank.

It was hoisted onto the lifeboat and carried down the river towards open water.

Although you may not spot a dolphin on your Canal Boat Holiday there are a host of species you will be able to observe.

As you gentle cruise along the canals on your Canal Boat you will get back to nature and have a chance to see and hear it close up.

Nature comes to you on a Canal Boat Holiday look out for the bird life that make the canal banks their home.

Take time and just stop and listen to the wonderful birdsong along the canal banks, listen for an owl hooting or for a nightingale singing at dusk or at first light listen for blackbirds, robins and wrens as the dawn chorus sounds the start of morning.

If you are really lucky you may spot a flash of blue as a kingfisher darts into the reeds or you may see a kestrel hovering overhead.

Water voles and otters sometimes make their home in the safety of the canal banks .
