30-07-2012 : FIRST MEDAL FOR TEAM GB

The first medal for team GB at the London Olympic Games was won by 23 year old cyclist Lizzie Armitstead who came second in the womens road race and bagged herself a silver.

Marianne Vos from the Netherlands won the gold after an amazing sprint to the rain soaked finish line.

Lizzie Armistead was roared through the final stages by a huge home crowd but just did not have enough speed at the end to win.

The GB cycling coach Dave Brailsford said Lizzie rode the perfect race but she did not quite have the legs to finish.

For cycling that is a little less punishing than the Olympic Road Race why not book a Canal Boat Holiday.

Moor up your Canal Boat and cycle along the tow path and depending on the location you choose you can take advantage of some glorious cycling opportunities.

The Offals Dyke Path is a Welsh national trail which crosses the beautiful Llangollen Canal at the Polysyllable Aqueduct.

There are cycle routes on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal to suit everyone if you only want a gentle ride try The Commander to Worcester which is ideal for children as it is only just over 3 km.

For the more adventurous try the route from Kings Norton on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal into the heart of Birmingham at Gas Street Basin.

The cycle route along the Kennet And Avon Canal is superbly way marked by Sumatrans the cycle charity.

You do need to be very careful when cycling on the canal bank and give consideration to walkers, fishermen and the wild life such as nesting swans or ducks who also use the canal tow path.

Please remember you must display a cycle permit at all times and these can be downloaded free of charge from the Canal and River Trust .
