27-04-2013 : HOW MANY GROMITS WILL YOU SPOT ON YOUR CANAL BOAT HOLIDAY TO BRISTOL

Canal Boat Holiday guests exploring Bristol this summer will think they are seeing things as the stroll through the city.

Around almost every corner and in prominent public spaces will be a five foot high sculpture of Gromit.

The 70 giant models of Aardman's famous canine character have been sent out to artists around the world to decorate with their own designs.

The statues will be put on display around the city from July, before being auctioned off in September in aid of the Bristol Children's Hospital.

Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park is closely involved with the project and will be designing one of the sculptures on the trail himself.

He said I can not wait to see how Gromit will look decorated by so many different artists.

I love the concept of these art trails and to have ‘Gromit at large’ is slightly scary in a nice way for me, but also an incredible honour.

Wallace and Gromit's Grand Appeal was formed 17 years ago after a public charity appeal to build a new children's hospital that enlisted the help of Bristol-based animation studio Aardman Animations.

Four specially designed Gromit sculptures have already been unveiled in Bristol and these have been decorated by British designers Sir Paul Smith and Cath Kidston, animator Richard Williams and illustrator Simon Tofield.
