10-07-2012 : ILKESTON MAKING HER WAY ACROSS THE CANAL NETWORK

If you are on a Canal Boat Holiday this summer cruising the Shropshire Union Canal or the Grand Union Canal you may be lucky enough to see the historic Canal Boat Ilkeston.

This century old horse drawn Canal Boat is making an epic journey through Britains canals and waterways.

During the summer the restored Canal Boat is making a trip from the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port to the London Canal Museum.

Ilkeston is a horse drawn Canal Boat built in 1912, which has been completely restored to its former glory thanks to boatyard staff, volunteers and Heritage Lottery Fund supported boatyard trainees at the innovative Heritage Boatyard at the Cheshire museum.

The Ilkeston will travel for 200 miles and will navigate her way through over 170 locks to London along the Shropshire Union and Grand Union Canals visiting towns and cities along the way.

As well as Ilkeston there are many more Canal Boats you may encounter during your Canal Boat Holiday.

Start your Canal Boat Holiday from Alvechurch and cruise to the Bancroft Basin at Stratford on Avon and visit The Barge Gallery this venue is home to works of art in this floating gallery.

The Brass Farthing has been converted into a floating bike and repair shop.

Based on the Oxford Canal it is a unique sight moored on the bank with its wares displayed on the roof and towpath, handy if you get a puncture.

The Cheese Boat says what it does on the tin the boat cruises the canal network selling some rather remarkable cheeses.

The Mikron Theatre Company and their now famous Canal Boat Tysley tour the waterways bringing productions to waterside venues throughout the UK.
