14-03-2012 : LADIES DAY AT THE 2012 CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL

Today is Ladies Day at the Cheltenham Festival and every lady visiting will be in with a chance of winning a fashion award.

There are 27 races that make up the Cheltenham Festival and these are the most hotly contested of the entire racing calendar.

Around 500 horses compete over the week for a share of the prize money.

Only The Grand National can rival this prestige meeting in the jump racing calendar.

The excitement of the week reaches its climax on Friday when the Cheltenham Gold Cup is run.

Some of racing legends have raced at Cheltenham including Desert Orchid, Best Mate, Kauto Star and Moscow Flyer.

As well as Cheltenham there are race courses near by to our Canal Boat Holiday bases so if you fancy your chances why not go along and see if you can pick a winner.

The course at Warwick is home to the National Hunt fixtures and the Kingmakers Novices Chase.

The race course at Warwick can be visited if you are cruising the Grand Union Canal on your Canal Boat Holiday.

Leicester Racecourse was established in 1882 and has seen some famous horses race there such as Zilzal, Diminuendo and Time Charter as is very close to our Canal Boat Holiday base at Union Wharf.

The historic city of Worcester on the banks of the River Severn has hosted racing at Pitchcroft since 1718 and is only a short walk away from our Canal Boat Holiday location at Lowesmoor Wharf.

Perhaps the most famous race courses of them all is Aintree in Liverpool which is home to The Grand National.

One of racing legends Red Rum is buried at the winning post and has a very fitting epitaph which reads Respect this place, this hallowed ground, a legend here his, rest has found, his feet would fly, our spirits soar, he earned our love for evermore.
