The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie celebrated going into its 60th year on stage with a gala performance featuring stars including Hugh Bonneville and Miranda Hart.

The play first opened in the West End in 1952 and holds the record for the world's longest running show.

For the staging of the gala performance, Phyllida Lloyd, who directed the Mamma Mia film as well as many West End hits, brought together a host of famous faces including Patrick Stewart, Julie Walters and Iain Glen.

The actors had less than 24 hours to learn the play and memorise stage directions one of the tricky things is that there are so many entrances and exits and it operates pretty quick fire, said cast member Chariots of Fire star Nicholas Farrell, who played detective sergeant Trotter.

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville said I'm very proud to be part of such a great legacy.

The special performance also had a serious side as it was raising money for the Mousetrap Theatre Projects, which aims to open theatre up to disadvantaged young people and those with special needs.

Many of our best loved theatres are close to the canals and a Canal Boat Holiday is a perfect excuse to treat yourself to a performance.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is a large national theatre owned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and is probably the most famous classical theatre company in the world.

Based in Stratford upon Avon it is easily reached from our base at Alvechurch.

The Swan Theatre in Worcester can be visited from our Lowesmoor Wharf location and The Bristol Hippodrome can be visited from our Canal BoatHoliday resort at Hilperton.

The Mikron Theatre Group even comes to you on your Canal Boat Holiday as they tour on their Narrowboat Tyseley taking the exciting world of the theatre to venues all along the canal system.
