12-01-2013 : POETRY AND LOCKS ON A CANAL BOAT HOLIDAY

Whilst essential maintenance work is being carried out at a lock on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal further work will see poetry by Jo Bell carved into the lock gate by the artist Peter Coates.

Arts development manager Tim Eastop explains the projects significance to the Canal and River Trust saying There is a longstanding link between arts and the waterways.

We hope we will encourage people to visit and support the waterways and hope that this project, called Locklines makes people smile and take a moment to stop and think about the wonderful canals that are on their doorsteps.

Lock gate making and fitting is an extremely skilled and traditional trade and the gates are constructed with tremendous strength as they have to control huge water pressures.

For a chance to see the carvings on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal or to feel the thrill of navigating a lock book a Canal Boat Holiday.

On a Canal Boat Holiday you will experience many sorts of locks as just about every canal in the UK has some type of lock.

There are also different types of locks such as the flight of 16 locks on the Kennet And Avon Canal at Caen Hill.

The Bingley Five Rise Locks raise or lowers boats through 60 feet in five huge chambers and this staircase on the Leeds And Liverpool Canal was completed in 1774.

The mighty Tardebigge Locks raises the Canal Worcester and Birmingham Canal up 220 feet over two and a quarter miles.

The 30 locks in the Tardebigge Flight make it the largest flight of locks in Britain.
