03-07-2012 : RARE ORCHIDS BLOOM IN NATIONAL TRUST WOODLAND

The Red Helleborine an extremely rare and endangered orchid, which was once on the brink of extinction in the UK, is blooming again in Gloucestershire.

The rare orchid is normally found in Europe where it is classed as vulnerable and only exists on three sites in southern England.

Seven years ago there were only three plants at the National Trust site in the Cotswolds but following conservation work there are now some 30 plants at the location.

National Trust countryside ranger Tim Jenkins said although the species had been recorded in the beech woodlands site for some 70 years, it was only in recent years that the number of plants had increased and they starting to flower regularly.

He added that it is hoped that one year to be able to harvest seed pods from the plant and send them off to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew to be propagated.

We are working with Kew and Natural England to try to optimise the surroundings to give it the best possible chance of surviving and multiplying.

You can really appreciate the woods and forests as you meander your way through them on your Canal Boat Holiday.

Windover Woods are on the edge of the Chilterns and can be reached from our Canal Boat Holiday centre at Gayton on the Grand Union Canal.

Explore the beautiful Oversley Woods which are close to Stratford Upon Avon and near to our Canal Boat Holiday base at Alvechurch.

The Wyre Forest, Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway can be visited from our Canal Boat Holiday location in Worcester.

Much of the Savernake Estate is leased by the Forestry Commission and is between Marlborough and Hungerford close to our Canal Boat Holiday resort on the Kennet And Avon Canal.

The Grand Avenue, designed by the famous landscape gardener Capability Brown , is an avenue of beech trees and at just over 4 miles long it is in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest avenue in Britain.
