13-10-2012 : THE LEEDS AND LIVERPOOL CANAL IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Two hundred years of history regarding the Leeds And Liverpool Canal system is going to be told on a new phone app.

The story of the Leeds And Liverpool Canal between the famous Bingley Five Rise Locks and the World Heritage Site at Saltaire has been developed as a new phone app, the first of its kind on the nations canal network.

The free app developed by the Canal and River Trust together with the local community is being launched at a public open day at Bingley Five Rise Locks this Saturday.

In addition to telling the story of the canal, which bought prosperity to the region when it was built over 200 years ago, the new app highlights todays waterway wildlife and tourism that flourishes on the Leeds And Liverpool Canal.

The app includes a walking trail between Bingley and Saltaire and will also direct visitors to the nearest cafes, pubs and public transport links to and from the canal.

Steve Higham from the Canal and River Trust said The app will drastically improve the visitor experience at this historic site that already ranks amongst Yorkshire’s most popular free attractions.

By using 21st century technology, we are able to bring the story of this 18th century engineering marvel to life.

Canal Boat Holiday guest cruising the Leeds And Liverpool Canal will now be able to download the app to enjoy two hundred years worth of history on 21st century technology.
