Europe's tallest building has been officially unveiled in central London just yards from the banks of the River Thames.

The Shard was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano has 72 floors which can be occupied as well as offices, exclusive residences, a luxury hotel, restaurants and a viewing gallery.

The Viewing gallery will be housed in the 68th to the 72nd floors of the skyscraper and from that vantage point guests will be able to see up to 40 miles away.

The viewing platforms are accessed by two high speed kaleidoscopic lifts that ascend to the buildings 68th level in 30 seconds.

From that point visitors are invited to the triple height, glass fronted Level 69 where the surrounding cityscape is fully exposed.

The viewing deck in The Shard will be almost twice as high as any other viewing point in London and its is expected to become a major tourist attraction when it opens next February.
