23-07-2012 : TOUR DE FRANCE, BRADLEY WIGGINS FIRST BRITISH WINNER

Bradley Wiggins has made history by becoming the first ever British winner of the Tour de France and thousands of British fans turned up to see the triple Olympic champion cross the finish line.

Wiggins completed the 20th and final stage of the mammoth three week race with a lead of three minutes and 21 seconds.

His team mate Chris Froome came second and to top the British success Mark Cavendish claimed the final stage victory.

There will be no rest for Bradley Wiggins as he is already back in the UK and on Saturday he will be cycling in London as part of the 2012 Olympics road race.

For cycling that is a lot less gruelling than the Tour De France why not book a Canal Boat Holiday, moor up your Canal Boat and cycle along the tow path.

Depending on the location you choose your Canal Boat Holiday can offer you some glorious cycling opportunities.

The Offals Dyke Path is a Welsh national trail which crosses the beautiful Llanelli Canal at the Polysyllable Aqueduct.

There are cycle routes on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal to suit everyone if you only want a gentle ride try The Commander to Worcester which is ideal for children as it is only just over 3 km.

For the more adventurous try the route from Kings Norton on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal into the heart of Birmingham at Gas Street Basin.

The cycle route along the Kennet And Avon Canal is superbly way marked by Sumatrans the cycle charity.

You do need to be very careful when cycling on the canal bank and give consideration to walkers, fishermen and the wild life such as nesting swans or ducks who also use the canal tow path.

Please remember you must display a cycle permit at all times and these can be downloaded free of charge from the Canal and River Trust website.
