29-09-2012 : TRACKING CUTTLEFISH

For decades researchers have been attaching tags to animals as diverse as whales and ants and now it is the turn of the cuttlefish.

These unusual sea creatures have colour changing skin and are extremely difficult to study in the wild.

They come inshore in spring and summer, but little is known about their migration in the autumn.

Now scientists are fitting 100 cuttlefish with tags in a bid to find out more about their behaviour.

You will not encounter any cuttlefish on your Canal Boat Holiday but you will be able to fish for a variety of other species.

The canals are easily accessible and free to explore and they are the ideal destination for fishermen.

What better way to spend the day than stepping off your Canal Boat straight onto the canal bank to fish.

You will not need to carry your equipment along the tow path or travel any great distance just moor up and away you go.

You will need a rod licence and these can be purchased from any local Post Office or from the environment agency.

Look out for the signs as sometimes fishing is prohibited as the rights are owner by local fishing clubs.

The close season on British rivers is between 15th March and 15th June but you can fish on canals at any time.
