14-09-2012 : WATER VOLES NUMBERS ON THE INCREASE

A recent report by the Environment Agency said the UKs water vole population had dropped 90 per cent since the 1980s, making it the UKs fastest declining mammal.

The numbers fell from over one million to just 400,000 in 10 years.

When thousands of North American mink were set free by animal activists in 1998 the water vole population was decimated but the animal is now making a comeback.

The endangered water vole, made famous through Kenneth Grahames character Ratty in the Wind in the Willows, is being spotted again by visitors thanks to a re introduction programme.

If you love wildlife then a Canal Boat Holiday is a perfect choice for you as your very own Nature watch will reveal itself to you.

On a Canal Boat Holiday every day the canal and surrounding areas spring into life with birds and animals such as water voles.

The canals are easily accessible and free to explore and they are the ideal destination for nature lovers.

As you gentle cruise along the canals on your Canal Boat Holiday you will get back to nature and have a chance to see the wildlife close up.

The towpath is home to a huge variety of birds and animals and many rare species thrive in the safe haven that the canal bank provides.
