25-05-2012 : COVENTRY CATHEDRAL 50 YEARS OLD

Coventry Cathedral, a fine example of 20th Century architecture, celebrates it Golden anniversary this week.

Over the years the cathedral has become a global symbol of peace and reconciliation.

The decision to build it came in the immediate aftermath of the devastation caused to the previous structure by bombing during World War II.

The cathedrals foundation stone was laid by the Queen on 23rd March 1956 and was consecrated in a service attended by the Queen and Princess Margaret in 1962.

Coventry Cathedral was voted the nations favourite 20th century building and is an iconic collection of architectural and artistic genius and was described by architect Basil Spence as a casket of jewels.
