23-04-2012 : WORLD SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL OPENS IN STRATFORD UPON AVON

The World Shakespeare Festival has been launched in Stratford upon Avon alongside the annual birthday celebrations.

William Shakespeare was born in Henley Street, Stratford upon Avon in 1564 and at 18 he married Anne Hathaway.

He spent between 1585 and 1593 in London where his success began as an actor and writer.

He soon became actor manager and part owner of a playing company called the Chamberlains Men and afterwards The Globe Theatres.

He returned to Stratford in 1613 and died there on the same date as his birth in 1616 .

According to the Royal Shakespeare Company the festival will be the biggest celebration of the playwright ever staged and will include productions from the USA, Mexico, Russia, Iraq and Brazil.

Thousands of actors using their own language will be taking part in performances across the world.

The Royal Shakespeare Company itself is also scheduled to present 12 new productions and some of the productions are being taken to London to form a central role in the final stages of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

You can join in the celebrations at the Stratford upon Avon and explore the lovely town on a Canal Boat Holiday booked from Alvechurch or Worcester Marinas.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is a large national theatre owned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the RSC, and is probably the most famous classical theatre company in the world.

So take the opportunity whilst on your Canal Boat Holiday and attend a performance of one of the Bards plays or take a guided a tour of the theatre.

Take a walk around the The Bancroft Gardens which are in front of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre where there is a statue of William Shakespeare with four characters from his plays representing Philosophy, Tragedy, Comedy and History.
