20-02-2012 : NEW WATER SOURCE FOUND FOR THE CROFTON PUMPING STATION

A Wiltshire tourist attraction, reliant on weekly deliveries of fresh water after its supply failed, has spent £20,000 on a new water source.

For seven months the Crofton Pumping station on the Kennet And Avon Canal has had to buy in water.

The water source, a deep level borehole, had provided water to a cafe, toilets and cottages at the historic attraction.

The Kennet And Avon Canal Trust said a new borehole had now been drilled.

The pumping station was built in the 1800s and is run by Canal Trust volunteers as a museum exhibit.

Visit The Crofton Pumping Station on a Canal Boat Holiday exploring the Kennet And Avon Canal.

Linking the River Thames at Reading to the Bristol Avon the Kennet And Avon Canal is Englands most southerly cross country broad beam canals.

It provided a direct lick between London and The Bristol Channel and also offered access to The Midlands via Oxford and the Thames.

Reopened by the Queen in 1990 this canal is fast becoming one of Britains favourite waterways.

On your Canal Boat Holiday navigate your way through the Caen Hill Locks, a flight of 16 locks and thought to be the most impressive anywhere on the UK's waterways.

They were engineer John Rennies solution to climbing the very steephill near to Devizes.

The Caen Hill Locks are part of a longer 29 lock flight all packed into just over two miles.

The Kennet And Avon Canal can be enjoyed on a Canal Boat Holiday from Hilperton or Aldermaston.
